About MSL laboratory
MSL is located on the second floor
of the Research Centre of King Faisal Specialist Hospital,
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (see address below). Our services are
primarily provided to children of Saudi Arabia and the Middle
East.
MSL provides specialized biochemical testing for the diagnosis of metabolic diseases. We currently focus on inborn errors of metabolism which results in accumulation of low molecular weight metabolites in biological fluids. This approach is useful in the diagnosis of four major classes of diseases namely: organic acidemias, fatty acid oxidation defects, amino acids disorders, and peroxisomal diseases.
Our main analytical tool for this diagnostic work is mass spectrometry, particularly tandem mass spectrometry (MSMS) of blood spots, plasma, CSF, and urine. We also use gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) for urine and plasma samples. We also use High pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LCMS) and LCMSMS.
In August 1998 we added a new tandem mass
spectrometer "QuattroLC" made by Micromass, UK. This
instrument is a bench-top MSMS instrument which is more sensitive
and more robust than the older version "Quattro I".
Based on methodologies developed at our Research Centre, we offer a tandem mass spectrometry based newborn screening package which covers over twenty metabolic diseases. We continue to develop new tests, and to broaden our range of tests.
